Imagine a World Wide Web that isn’t worldwide. That means no international business, no social media, and no “Gangnam Style” on YouTube. What a boring world!
But thankfully, the web is worldwide. And you can connect to it from San Francisco to Seoul and back again. XCom Global’s advanced mobile access points let you log into your Facebook, connect to your office’s central network, or just find the closest McDonald’s—no matter where you are in the world.
Best of all, you can avoid astronomical fees and other out-of-this world charges by understanding how international Internet access works. So let’s break down the costs of getting mobile and Internet access abroad.
Of course, there are other options aside from XCom Global’s services, but they’re quite pricey and inconvenient. For example, you could rent a smartphone that can be used in your country of travel. It’s better than paying the $20 per megabyte roaming fee, but renting a smartphone costs significantly more than paying for an international voice plan.
Many carriers also offer data plans for traveling abroad, but these data plans are severely limited and feature high overage charges, which means you have to constantly police your data usage. That means you can’t use certain applications, nor can you visit websites that contain videos, audio, or images. In that case, it would be better to just leave your mobile device at home.
With XCom Global, you can surf the web and use all the apps on your smartphone without worrying about insane fees.
How the Equipment Works
First, you need the right equipment. Since each country has its own infrastructure and rules that govern that infrastructure, your devices need to be regionally specific. This is very complicated for anyone to set up themselves, and in almost all cases, not worth the trouble, even for those who are able.
XCom Global has gone through that trouble, and we’ve built region-specific hotspots designed to work in whatever country to which you travel. What that means: when you order XCom’s Global Mobile MiFi product, you tell us what countries you’ll be traveling to. We send you a hotspot for those countries that will only work in those countries. Once your trip is through, you send your MiFi back to us in a prepaid package that comes included with your devices.
You can connect up to five devices simultaneously—cell phones, laptops, iPods, or anything else—up to 30 feet away from the hotspot. As long as the lithium-ion battery is charged, you’re connected in 175 countries!
The Cost of Infinite Internet Access
Here’s a simple breakdown of the equipment costs:
- One MiFi hotspot or USB laptop modem for one country: $14.95 a day.
- One MiFi hotspot for one month: $395 per month.
That’s it. No expensive plans, no overage charges, no crazy fees for using the Internet. All you pay is the one flat rate for access from your personal XCom Global Mobile MiFi hotspot (shipping is extra).
However, though you can download a potentially unlimited amount of data, you probably won’t be able to do exactly that. Each country institutes bandwidth caps designed to keep data flowing for all Internet users, instead of allowing a few people to hog the connections and download enormous amounts of data. As long as you keep your data consumption to reasonable levels as you travel, you should be OK.

How Fast Does The Cost Accrue?
Whether you’re a family traveling to the Great Wall of China, a businessman doing business in Tokyo, or just a college grad backpacking through Europe, you’ll know exactly how much it will cost you to access the Internet before you even set foot out the door.
Let’s say you’re going to be in Germany for two days, France for two days and Italy for three days. When you order your personal MiFi hotspot, you tell us your itinerary. We send you the necessary devices that will work in the specific country in which you’ll be. You’ll pay roughly $59.80 for the first four days (which includes access in two countries), and then $74.85 for the third day (which includes a $30 surcharge for all countries after the first two). That’s about $134.65 for your entire one-week trip to Europe!
Best of all, you can add days to your itinerary as needed. Just call our helpful customer service representatives to have your device activated for additional time, or to have a new device sent to you so you can get access in another country. There are no overage charges or secret fees!
Where to Begin
Start your trip abroad by first calling XCom Global and ordering your personal mobile MiFi hotspot. Never worry about finding WiFi (which is not nearly as prevalent or reliable outside of the U.S.) when you need it most.
