What if I or one of my traveling companions gets sick or injured?
Certainly a concern if you’re traveling to a third world country, but even if it isn’t, it’s a foreign environment to you and it’s understandable that you might feel uneasy. There are some simple precautions you can take to set your mind at ease.
First, understand what your health insurance will or won’t cover as you travel overseas and purchase supplemental insurance to ensure you have adequate coverage. If you are traveling to remote areas or countries with limited medical capabilities, be sure your insurance or supplemental insurance will cover medical evacuation.
Second, don’t travel if you are already sick or recovering from a major injury or illness. If you are managing your health with medication, be sure to pack double the amount of medication you will need and store in two different locations so you have a backup supply should one of your bags go missing.
And finally, take good care of yourself while you are on the road. Minimize exposure to illness-causing bacteria by washing your hands frequently and/or carrying around hand sanitizer. Even if you’re on vacation, be sure to get a good night’s sleep especially if you are fighting off jet lag. Drink bottled water and avoid water from the tap. And choose your food wisely – if you’re not sure it’s been prepared in sanitary conditions, skip it.
While you’re making your travel plans, don’t forget to arrange for low-cost Internet access through XCom Global for stress-free connectivity while you’re on the road.
